Complacency
Hmm. I haven't posted in some time, although I have several "hatchling" posts waiting for completion. I hate that, this entire business of waiting for an idea to crystallize so that you can shape it and complete it. But at the same time, there is a certain charm to keeping a pre-journal journal (does that make sense?) where you toss in half-baked ideas. I love looking back and trying to make sense of what I wanted to write, and finding little nuggets that make me happy to be a writer.
Thumping my own Bible? You bet. A lot of writing is, I believe, a form of ego. We adapt writing personas, just as actors have public and private images. I like pretending to be bitchier, sillier, and crazier than I really am. For one, I live a rather sedate life, and the high point of my day can get as banal as finding something on sale. But when I write about things, they become more important. As Martian Solution (argh, am trying to learn how to link other peoples' blogs to mine, and failing miserably. I am Beerkada's "inter-nitwit.") said in his first long post, chronicling a life can make it more meaningful.
Was it Emerson who said that the unexamined life was not worth living?

Will be writing more about writing; will be cannibalizing my own blog for my upcoming professorial lecture. Heh heh.
I am amazed that I've been teaching for ten years now, and here's a cliche: where did the time go?

I love clicking the "Next Blog" link. I'm wondering how long it'll take before I stumble on someone I know. I've also found lovely blogs; try http://richardsonzoo.blogspot.com (sorry, still don't know how to link. To rip off on Beerkada, I am the global village idiot) and read the funny, funny essay on gift-wrapping with cats! The owner, Cheryl Richardson, has a passion for rescuing animals, and she is also a librarian. Had I not been a writing teacher, I would've loved to have been a librarian. Too bad I'm a messy person! ^o^
